Who we are.
Eyre Writers is a group of people from all walks of life, aged between 18 and 90-plus, who share a love of writing. There is no skill level requirement for joining – we have members at every stage of their writing journey from beginner to multi-published authors.
At our twice-monthly meetings we offer assistance (in the form of brainstorming) with any problems members are having with their individual writing projects. Our discussions on writing and different ways to approach various aspects of the craft are often lively and informative.
At regular meetings we also aim to do at least one on-the-spot exercise, the writing from which members can read aloud if they choose.
Many of our members have published novels, either independently or traditionally, and are happy to share their knowledge and experience.
Members enjoy writing short stories, poetry, screenplays, and more in genres as diverse as suspense, mystery, thriller, romance, fantasy, sci-fi, young adult, children’s and historical fiction. We also explore non-fiction writing such as memoir, vignette, journaling and essays.
In addition to regular meetings Eyre Writers hold occasional half and/or full day workshops run by either one of our members or a visiting author.
What Eyre Writers is NOT
Eyre Writers is not an editing service. Nor are we a manuscript assessment agency. Occasionally we hold critiquing sessions where members can bring a sample of their work to present for feedback from the group. But apart from these sessions Eyre Writers provides no critical review of work. Instead we aim to assist our members in acquiring the skills to revise and edit their own work. If you wish to have your manuscript assessed however we can certainly direct you to sources which provide this professional service.
Partnerships
Eyre Writer members who write in a similar genre occasionally team up to form critiquing partnerships that meet apart from regular club meetings for the purpose of giving feedback on work in progress. Once you’ve been with us for a while and have identified someone you think you'd feel comfortable working with, approach them and ask if they’d be open to exchanging work for feedback. Be mindful however that such partnerships are a two way street and you’ll be expected to provide feedback as well as receive it. Also note that job, family and other commitments may prevent some members from taking part.
